Hydraulic log splitters

Past 20 tonnes, force is no longer the limiting factor on straight wood. The difference shows on knotty timber, large sections and how the machine holds up over a full day. For domestic use, 20 to 22 tonnes is plenty.

Vertical for heavy timber: the round stays on the ground and is never lifted. Horizontal for medium sections worked standing, more comfortable and faster in series. A 60 cm oak round weighs over 80 kg, which settles the question quickly.

PTO removes an engine to service and costs less, but ties up the tractor for the whole session. A self-contained engine leaves you free to work at a customer's place or at the far end of a plot, with nothing else needed.
